Who doesn't like organizing? Well, maybe a lot of people but I'm not one of them! I recently came across what I believe to be a gift from God on Netflix. The Home Edit. How have I not heard of this before? I binged every episode in one day. Now I need their book!
I like things that are neat and tidy. It makes me feel like I have some control in this crazy world and who doesn't need that right now? I highly recommend the show but if you blow through it like I did and need some more eye candy of organized spaces, I compiled some images from model homes that I have been working on that required some serious organizing.
Open shelving is very "IN" right now but let's face it, it's not always easy to deal with. I have one word that will solve all of your problems: containers. "The Container Store" isn't named that for no reason. They picked the one word that summarizes ALL of organizing: containers. This is also a theme of The Home Edit. How could it not be? Whether you use baskets, jars, bins, bowls, buckets or trays, they will help solve all of your organizing efforts.
So, everything you own doesn't match? Put it in a container! Don't know what to do with unsightly necessary items for the bathroom? Put them in a container!
Containers don't need to be expensive, they just need to match. Stick with a simple color scheme, going off of a shower curtain, wallpaper (yes, it's back in), wall color, towel color or rug to get started. The bins shown above and below are all from Target. One of my go-tos
Measurements are important when purchasing containers so take a tape measure with you when you shop or if you shop online know what sizes you are looking for in advance. I like rectangles because you can turn them so you can have two different measurements. If a bin doesn't fit one way, turn it to the side and see what happens.
Don't be afraid to mix baskets and bins but just make sure they work well together. If you want to play around with it, order more than you need, work it out and return the rest. Most stores have a generous return policy if something doesn't work out.
I have just shown bathroom shelves here but the concept is the same for organizing any open shelf. Open shelves can be great in that you can see everything that you have but when you want to actually hide some things, containers will be your salvation. Oh, and I'm sure the Home Edit girls would say, "Don't forget your labels." and they were the inspiration for the article after all.
